Howard Lucas is a craftsman, wood turner & up-cycler who works from his studio workshop located in the heart of rural Warwickshire on the outskirts of Stratford Upon Avon just 20 minutes from the northern edge of the Cotswolds and the beautiful Arts and Crafts inspired gardens of Hidcote Manor.
Howard is a Craftsman with an appreciation of the beauty of nature, especially wood and it’s natural grain patterns, colours and textures. In his work Howard tries to utilise these features and the natural characteristics of the timber he’s working with by sympathetically shaping, to create simple complimentary uncomplicated tactile organic flowing forms. Colour forms an integral and fundamental part of Howard’s turned work and by using a combination of processes, including staining, burning, painting & liming he adds contrast, depth of finish and texture to each of his pieces, which emphasise and highlight the natural grain patterns, textures and colours of the timbers he’s working with.
Fitness for purpose, form & function are also important key elements of Howard’s work especially when he’s working with redundant, unused, broken and discarded materials and items. He relishes the design and making challenges presented by working with unwanted materials using them to create new functional pieces each with their own individual distinctive character & charm.
