Minimalist structures have always fascinated Howard and his aim when designing this piece was to create a very simple yet sculptural structure which would support the light fitting while giving the impression that the light is floating. The overall structure is very simple and is comprised of just four items, a central boss which is made from a piece of reclaimed Oak kitchen worktop which has been turned into a disc, fumed and then limed with a royal blue liming paste, which adds colour and highlights to the natural grain of the oak. The three splayed 9mm diameter fumed Beech legs pass through
the central turned boss and are glued and wedged into position, which adds to the detailing to the upper surface of the boss. The resultant simple structure visually resembles the iconic image of the Martian space craft as I'm sure you agree.
